Sunday Education Hour

Every Sunday morning we offer several classes for adult study and conversation around the word of God during our educational hour (9:25am to 10:25am), where there are opportunities for the whole family to gather in groups for study, prayer and encouragement. Each is structured so that newcomers/visitors may join or try them out at any time in the cycle of the class curriculum.

We arrange our classes in a variety of settings and disciplines of study to help offer variety and connect with personal needs. There are four basic approaches to Christian studies (Biblical, Topical, Historical, Missional). While they all intersect around the living and active connections with the word of God, each discipline helps prepare us for living our faith in different ways.

Sunday Morning Adult Bible Class

Currently our adult education hour topic is The Challenge of Islam

          Bible Study Leader: Ben Roberts
          Location: Heritage Room 113

  September-November

To the Western mind, the faith and practice of Islam are often a profound mystery. In recent years, this religion has emerged as a prominent — yet misunderstood — belief system. Listen as Sam Shamoun, an Arab-Christian, unveils some of the mystique surrounding this religion first preached by Muhammad and today practiced by more than one billion people worldwide.

In Part Two of this Bible study, Sam Shamoun, an Arab-Christian, examines key texts from the Qur’an and the Bible. Among the items he sheds light on are Islamic presuppositions concerning the priority of the Qur’an, Bible texts considered corrupt by Muslims, the sonship of believers, and Islam’s position on the Trinity.
Shamoun’s compelling explanation of the three phases of jihad or Muslim “holy war” is of particular benefit to users of this Bible study. This term-oft heard and oft misunderstood over the last few years-is essential for the non-Muslim to understand. As delivered in the Qur’an, jihad is a three-stage process describing how Islam is to be advanced throughout the world. Whether expressed as peaceful co-existence, a defensive stance, or an offensive posture, the level of jihad depends on the prevailing social and political milieu Muslims find themselves in. The study’s final lesson shows how society might be altered if non-Muslims’ conduct and beliefs were subjugated to the tenets and practice of Islam. Finally, Christians are offered encouragement and talking points when encountering Muslims on faith issues and sharing the hope they have in Christ Jesus.
