The
Advent and Christmas Season
In Advent we begin another
church year—a new cycle of worship in which we again remember and celebrate the
life of our Lord Jesus. Advent is a time of waiting and watching and listening
for the coming of the Lord. It is a time to prepare to celebrate the first big
event in the life of Christ, His birth. In Advent the church prays earnestly:
“Come, Lord Jesus!” And it is clear from practically every page in the Bible
that God wishes to be present with us.
We may often feel that God is not present with us, and when we feel that way, we
are not alone. We are, in fact, in the company saints and of sinners through the
ages who wrestled with the perception that God had abandoned them. Isaiah is our
Advent prophet cries out, in anguish and frustration, “O that you would tear
open the heavens and come down!” (Isaiah 64:1) He certainly didn’t say that
because he’d been having coffee with God every morning. Isaiah felt that God had
abandoned him and his people -- because of their wickedness, of course, but
abandoned them nevertheless.
As we prepare to remember the coming of the Christ Child at Christmas, we are
called to wait, to watch and to listen for this often seemingly absent God to
speak to us and to await His coming. Our Advent theme – “A Baby Changes
Everything” – will help us in our waiting and preparation. We will see how THE
BABY, Jesus, changes the way we wait, the way we hear, the way we speak, and the
way we live and love in our homes.
